A Realm OF Possibilities

I’ve long wanted to write an extensive work for advanced wind ensemble. I couldn’t tell you why, but it just never happened until this moment. We look back at all of the music we have previously created along with the compositions of the giants before us and it can feel impossible to know what is necessary to create the next work of such stature. One of the things I learned while writing this piece is that ultimately, it does not matter the end result of a composition nor can we control that. What we can control is our joy in the creative process and the energy we bring to our music writing. At times while writing this piece, I felt more joy writing music than I have in a long time. Composing this piece truly felt like something new for me.

This music explores the unknown. It explores a realm beyond us and where we can imagine. It begins with a foreboding unpredictability which encapsulates the feeling of not knowing what may happen or what could exist. Upon landing in this new realm, we explore the surroundings and realize that there are beautiful things despite them being new to us. And as we discover further, we see the greatest of possible joys and celebrations. As amazing as some of the things in this realm are, there are elements equally as terrifying. Dissonance takes grip and we plunge to the depths of darkness. Not staying for long, the music evolves upward through ascending melodic motifs and dense harmonies. Emerging back to the light, we experience an intense excitement, taking a complete tour of the realm through the sky. Upon exploring all that exists, we find ourselves at peace in this expansive new world.

This work is a new realm of possibility for me and was an adventurous writing escapade. This is only the beginning of a long journey for me exploring all possibilities that are out there and hope that this work can inspire others to do the same.
